Blu-ray Sales: February 13-20: Greenland Tops the Charts Again  Posted February 26, 2021 12:20 AM by Sean Greenwood Blu-ray MoviesFor the week that ended on February 20th, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Greenland topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the second week in a row. The disaster film, about a massive "planet killer" comet on a collision course with Earth, stars Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin and was originally planned for a theatrical release last year. Ultimately, however, a US theatrical release didn't happen because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the film only opened in select international territories, with a VOD release in the US in December 2020. Still, the film managed a highly respectable $47 million at the global box office, and received positive reviews. This week, Greenland had an HD share of 46%. www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=28229

Noticed on Greenland’s IMDb site under Awards, the movie has 3 nomination  Hope there are more to come. And this month’s selection of streaming under-the-radar science fiction will make you ponder many more questions. “Greenland Welcome to an alternate reality in which Earth gets destroyed by a comet and Gerard Butler is in a pretty good movie. What propels films that describe an extinction event is not whether our planet will be saved — it won’t — but who will somehow make it through, and how. Usually we follow a small group of people and the one in “Greenland” is down to a nuclear nub: John and Allison Garrity (Butler and Morena Baccarin) and their diabetic young son, Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd). This helps prevent Ric Roman Waugh’s movie from getting too scattered, even when the Garritys are separated: The tight focus, compounded by a relatively restrained filmmaking style, creates an anxiety-inducing atmosphere. Sure, “Greenland” recycles some clichés of the genre (bickering couple reconciles in adversity, for example) but it also raises thorny ethical and practical issues, partly because of Nathan’s condition. I was wondering if they would consider doing a sequel… saw so many comments that the ending should have shown more regarding what it will take to live in a destroyed world. I Hope they get the movie sold at Cannes.
