This from director Alex Proyas today 8/29/16 = to bad Gerry schedule wasn't clear to promote the film in Japan. I noticed that London Has Fallen hasn't been released in Japan yet- I wonder if that movie will ever be released in Japan.
Alex Proyas 15 hrs ·
HEY, JAPAN! You have the strange honour of getting your theatrical release of GoE last but certainly not least. September 9th. Japan released my first movie SPIRITS theatrically when few other territories did -- thank you Gaga Films! You guys rock. Hope the movie is warmly received - sorry I could not be there for the premiere.

Japan release of GOE was what should have been the norm for the release of the film with the young actors promoting the movie. A little to late now I am afraid.
The movie made $3million in 10 days of release bringing up the total of GOE to $149 million

Have you seen this..... I think that in this post from Alex Proyas lies the explanation why Gerry didn't do the promotion for GOE.... well Alex said that studio didn't want him to do promotion for his own movie........ I mean wth?! Alex Proyas21 September at 14:50 · ON THE EVE OF THE WORLD PREMIERE OF GODS OF EGYPTThere I was in NYC, one of my favourite cities on earth, as the day of judgement loomed. It would turn out to be by far the most unpleasant premiere I have ever had for any of my movies. Premieres are not something I usually enjoy at the best of times — but this one was particularly heinous. The studio were so shit scared of the “controversy” regarding the perceived lack of diversity in the casting, they effectively banned me from doing any media for my own movie, even though they were unanimously supportive of the movie and its cast up until the 11th hour. So much so they were asking for a sequel! They were canning the cast doing interviews on the Today Show at the final hour as they thought it would be a bloodbath regarding the “whitewashing”. Maybe they were right? This was the most bizarre movie promotion of my career — America and political correctness had seemingly gone nuts. So there I was, wandering around the MET with my family to kill time and I stumble across the Egyptian exhibit -- room upon room of artifacts plundered from my homeland. Entire temples, shipped stone by stone from Egypt and rebuilt in NYC for the amusement of tourists. Ah, the bitter irony for an Egyptian guy who was about to be taught some lessons on cultural appropriation by America, which happily steals history, as so many Western countries have from the ancient world. Does anyone other than me see this irony? Yes? Maybe? Obviously not. www.facebook.com/OfficialAlexProyas/photos/a.1093362784048433.1073741828.1050701614981217/1229784057072971/?type=3&theater

I absolutelly love this............ LOL great article..... (Well I don't like the part of Gerry as B-movie star, but still I like the article).... birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/09/19/it-turns-out-gods-of-egypt-was-awesomeIt Turns Out GODS OF EGYPT Was AwesomeDevin makes the case for the fantasy flop.
"As the villainous Set Gerard Butler is simply delicious. He knows EXACTLY what kind of a movie he’s making and he relishes every single piece of scenery he devours. Butler’s not a good actor in a traditional sense, but he’s a great B-movie star, and here he’s the best he’s been since 300. He plays my favorite kind of villain, the kind who loves being a villain. Set takes pleasure in his evil, and it makes him both fun to watch and fun to root against. He’s not conflicted, he’s not whiny, he’s just trying to ruin everything for everybody else."
"The script is occasionally glib and not all the casting works (but man, a lot of it really does), and Proyas simply didn’t have the budget he needed to bring his fever dream of Ancient Egypt to life, but Gods of Egypt is so much fun and so cool looking that I don’t mind. I’ll take a whirlwind of colorful energy and weirdo ideas over the kind of drab blockbusters 2016 seems intent on serving up to us. I’m sorry I missed this movie in theaters, and I wish I had been able to defend it on initial release. Ten years from now people are going to really enjoy Gods of Egypt for what it is - get in on it early."

They never should have released in North America first. Should have made their bank in Asia and let the buzz for the fantasy spectale unseen build stateside then given it a limited release. By that point, negative reviews or controversy don't matter.
With the last X-Men promo I know they had Singer not doing it due to all the allegations going on at the time, so I guess marketing folks would rather not take the chance of a person saying the wrong thing and just have them not do the promo. Go fig. I would think the discussion, even if not positive and becoming foot in the mouth is still press. You would think they would have canned and trained responses on hand, too or control the questioning on press day, but go fig.
Why do you guys always pick on critics? I think there is a difference between when a critic is supposed to dissect and analyze a film for its flaws and other times to just realize something is fun even if bad. Difference between the tone and how they do it nicely proves the better writer to me.

Difference between the tone and how they do it nicely proves the better writer to me. It does seem for myself I pick on critics doesn't it. You said it well. The tone and how it's written makes all the difference. Each to their own opinion and if you don't like it fine. Unfortunately a lot of critics seem to want to tag Gerry personally to any negative opinion, not just they didn't like the film and why on its own merits. Plus how many people do you think didn't see GOE because a poorly written review or public political stances included in these reviews? And now in the privacy of their own home, they watch it and love it. Previous 2 opinion posts here show this. I know that's not the critics but the public who need to see a film regardless of what anybody says if it interests them. But back to it, a well written truly objective review is good. Not one that reads as personal attack style. Or simply I'm just a movie goer who supports an actor I believe is amazing and whose talent shines regardless of the genre of a film he does as we all here believe in him and his gifts

Yes, tone. You can say the pros and cons of a picture and not be, well, mean. I think some critics however have a preconcieved notion that colors their writing, or often you read of ones who are forced to review a film not in their preferred genre. Folks who don't like action or fantasy would not like Gods of Egypt.
This is why they should have circumvented the US Box office, because audiences have ease to see a review or rating on their phone and were afraid to be seen at the cinema amid the controversy. And yes, these days it is so much easier to watch at home. Marketing and reaching the audience I think is two fold, avoiding negative critics is one, but the advertising and such knowing how to target the public as well. And the public in Asia is by nature, huge and action loving.
Look at Machine Gun Preacher. Good reviews but poor marketing and release ruined it. So much calculating with dates and releases rather than just letting a good film be. If I put on my suspicious cap, I still would say they might be able to write off Gods of Egypt stateside and get part of their return.

GOE WW total is finally over 150 million thanks to Japan's release 2 weeks ago. I do wish the studio would change the production budget figure since the director said the movie did not cost $140 million it was just a little over $125 million. I guess it doesn't matter since it needed to double its budget to make a good profit.
Domestic: $31,153,464 20.7% + Foreign: $119,097,445 79.3% = Worldwide: $150,250,909

125 mil maybe was all he made it, but there could have been another 20 or 30 mil in marketing costs, which comes off the top rather than kind of like a commission last when a film has met other costs, because you would think if there was crap marketing then they wouldn't get paid but I digress. soapbox
