Damn you made me well up! I certainly wish him to be able to go home if he wishes, I think from the way he talks about Scotland, and how he got his Scottish vibe even miles away from home, he surely must miss it. I sure do, being an immigrant, even in our modern days technology, it's still hard, because your heart is split, and the people you love often are too.

Me too, Embla, So many of us have been "transplanted" and know the feeling but remember all to well the feeling of being where we feel we belong or want to be. This time of year that brings memories closer and me waxing a bit nostalgic lol. Truly hope he finds his way home or perhaps Scotland will come to him? That would be lovely too. No, don't want him spending Christmas without family either.

I understand you completely...I'm in the same position, for more than 10 years I haven't been with my family for Christmas. Fortunally or unfortunally that time of year is the busiest and I don't have time to be sad...... my family is always in my heart....

Scots get very home sick when they are away for any length of time. At Hogmaney the tears flow freely especially if someone is singing the song "my ain folk."

.. My Ain Folk Far frae my hame I wander, but still my thoughts return To my ain folk ower yonder, in the shieling by the burn. I see the cosy ingle, and the mist abune the brae: And joy and sadness mingle, as I list some auld-warld lay.
Chorus And it's oh! but I'm longing for my ain folk, Tho' they be but lowly, puir and plain folk: I am far beyond the sea, but my heart will ever be At home in dear auld Scotland, wi' my ain folk. O' their absent ane they're telling, the auld folk by the fire: And I mark the swift tears welling, as the ruddy flame leaps high'r. How the mither wad caress me, were I but by her side: Now she prays that Heav'n will bless me, tho' the stormy seas divide.

I know that Scots and Dutch share a lot of words but I'm sure there are many similarities with the Scandinavian languages. I remember seeing pictures of the Faroese Parliament chamber before and after a refit and underneath the latter it said: "Efter" and that is Scots for after.

I cry everytime I hear Mameli's Hymn, especially when I think of the jackals eating up my poor Italy these days, and without a fail everytime I see photos of Rome or the Appennini and sea side of Lazio. When I went to Scotland I found that its people are very similar to us from Rome; tough cookies on the outside and silly sentimentals on the inside, I spent some days working in Glasgow many years ago, and my first friend when I moved in UK was a chap from Perth, lovely lovely old guy who stuck on me the habit of calling girls "lass", and whose friendliness has made my first months in UK less lonely. We used to joke that both Rome and Glasgow are sitting on seven hills and that we both pronounce the double RR as a single letter, very odd and funny fact.

We used to joke that both Rome and Glasgow are sitting on seven hills and that we both pronounce the double RR as a single letter, very odd and funny fact. There's an old Scots saying "we're a' Jock Tamson's bairns" which translated means "We are all God's children" (you might have known that God would be a Scotsman, lol) and the more you get to know people from other countries the more you come to realise that we have more in common than we have differences. I don't think that Glasgow has seven hills but Edinburgh is certainly built on seven hills. Abbey, Calton, Castle grand, Southward see St Leonards stand, St Johns and Sciennes as two are given, And Multrees makes Seven. Sciennes (pronounced sheens) is a corruption of Sienna and takes it's name from the convent of St. Catherine of Sienna.
