Plane 2 gets name change and interim agreement, free to begin filming
The sequel to this year’s Plane gets a bonkers title and an actors’ guild exemption, meaning filming can begin.


Plane was a fun watch when it zoomed into cinemas earlier this year, with Gerard Butler’s brilliantly-named Captain Brodie Torrance fighting off bad guys whilst being ably supported by the very cool Mike Colter. Plane‘s more sincere moments worked as well, for a ‘does-what-it-says-on-the-tin’ action flick at least, whilst the action sequences were fun too.

Audiences responded positively to the film, it made $74m from a reported $10m production budget and thus, a sequel was duly announced before Plane had even left cinemas. Originally, we were told that the sequel was going to be titled Ship, a name so hilariously obvious that we were sure there was a healthy dollop of irony involved during the naming process.

However, Screen Daily is reporting that the project is now going under the name Plane 2: Stowaway. As previously reported, Colter’s character Louis Gaspare has been announced as the lead character in the sequel with Gerard Butler not returning (although he is still producing).

Here’s the weird thing though: according to the outlet, the synopsis for the film hasn’t changed meaning it is still set on a ship, with Colter’s Lois Gaspare stowing ‘aboard a cargo ship which has fallen into the hands of human traffickers.’

So let’s recap. The film is the sequel to a movie set onboard a plane, called Plane. The sequel will be set aboard a ship and was originally called Ship but is now also called Plane. Considering the series is using such a simple naming formula, it’s sure getting confusing.

Anyway, the production has been looking for international investment this week at the Toronto International Film Festival, and given the success of the first film we doubt it had too much trouble. It won’t hurt either that the project has been given an exemption agreement by SAG-AFTRA, the US actors’ union meaning filming can get underway despite the ongoing actors’ strike in Hollywood.

We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it, especially when news of a third film drops that is set onboard a submarine whilst still being titled… Plane.
