Got ice? Sub thriller 'Hunter Killer,' set beneath polar ice cap, to shoot in NOLA -- in JulyThe sub thriller 'Hunter Killer' is reportedly set to shoot in New Orleans this summer, with a cast including Gerard Butler, Billy Bob Thornton and Common.Summertime in New Orleans wouldn't seem the most obvious of filming locations for a submarine thriller set beneath the polar ice cap, but Hollywood has a way of making strange bedfellows, and that's one of its most recent. Relativity Media is set to shoot its film "Hunter Killer" is town this July, with Billy Bob Thornton and Common set to star opposite Gerard Butler, according to Variety. Martin Campbell, who shot the much-maligned superhero film "Green Lantern" in town in summer 2010, is set to direct from a script by Peter Craig, in turn based on the novel "Firing Point" by former sub skipper George Wallace and Alabama author Don Keith. The story focuses on a submarine commander and a group of elite Navy Special Forces units who -- though cut off from all outside communication -- find themselves the last line of defense against a renegade Russian military leader intent on igniting a nuclear confrontation with the United States. A synopsis of the book from Keith's website reads: "A rogue Russian admiral has begun a plot to bring the planet to the brink of World War III, all so he can reunite the Soviet Union. Now, it is up to a U.S. Navy submarine, its untested captain, and a Navy SEAL team to rescue the president, avenge the deaths of American sub sailors and avert the conflagration." Toby Jaffe and Neal H. Moritz are producing. Campbell isn't the only member of the production for whom "Hunter Killer" will mark a return to the Crescent City. Butler just wrapped on the Warner Bros. thriller "Geostorm," Thornton just finished shooting on the political comedy "Our Brand is Crisis," and Moritz's extensive producing credits include "21 Jump Street" and "22 Jump Street." All of those films were shot in and around New Orleans. www.nola.com/movies/index.ssf/2015/03/hunter_killer_film_new_orleans.html

He is the captain of a new submarine and he is Russian, should be great. I bought the book today and it is seeming to be a real thriller,(kindle). I can hardly put it down. ALso in the beginning it describes his character and he has white hair??? Wonder if this will happen? The plot is about the Russians want to get rid of him.....so he and his crew will have to escape somehow. Will be learning some Russian? Filming in NOLA is crazy in July, but they have probably have Alaska filming(icy waters, high winds, etc.) Guess the sub will be well air conditioned.

So they are lining up costars already for the film. It does sound like it is finally coming together. I hope it works out for him. Keeping his face out there. I still believe the best is yet to come from him. I like the fact he does take chances even it they all don't work out. He seems to thrive on challenges.

Ok, so I read the book and think I was wrong about him being Russian? There are about four subs involved so maybe he is going to Capt. AN American sub. Keeps you on your toes! Should be a good one!

Sounds good. Someone on JJ thinks he's Capt Glass, who has grey hair (slightly better than white)! Lol... But again, he's Russian apparently, so maybe not.... Unless he likes the challenge of speaking some Russian! smiley-laughing025

I think from one of the news releases I read that Gerry is slated to play a Captain Glass who is an American Navy commander - so his American accent will be back -

This is exactly what I thought, there are so many different groups of people, don't think any of them will get enough exposure,(not good when we want to see Gerry in every scene!), but I am sure or hope the writers take care of that! I had to keep trying to keep the right capt. on the right ship.....and like they said, the names are Russian(most), and I don't think Gerry will come into it early, seemed to me about middle of book?
