Very interesting about the book, I did not know all of this. So, he was born with a bad face, not like the beatings he got as a captive who was used as a side show? THAT was the whole reason Christine saved him?
I think the critics did not like Gerry as the Phantom because he was not an opera singer. I really think he did extremely well, considering he only trained for a year. I am a great fan of the Phantom, having seen it in London five times. They change their singers fairly often, I never did see a bad one, but LIKED some better then others.
Very nice threads here, you girls are doing a wonderful job!

I thought he sang very well too. but you could notice he wasn`t as trained as some of the others. But the way he sang, made it feel "real" if you know what I mean. I`ve heard some of the famous opera singers performing "Music of the Night" and I must say that it just sounded very pompously. Didn`t like it at all!

I like his voice in it and don't mind that it wasn't uber operatic. They did change the gace from the book, mainly I think he is described as not having a nose, tee hee. Like the old Chaney look I guess.

Erik in the book was described as a skeleton that walks, the deformity was extended to the entire right side of the body not just the face ... it's as if he did not have the muscles and the skin is yellowish pull on the bones almost as if it were transparent ... as far as the face, he has no nose but only a black hole, the eyes are so deep-set that you can not see during the day while at night glow in the dark like those of the coyote ... he did not hair, but only lock clicked down, while his lips are so thin that when fully grins discovers the teeth and gums in the book ... his mask also has a fake nose, but the opposite of the film, in the book he turns quietly through the city, go shopping ... he also knows how to play the violin and plays it to the cemetery to make it clear to Christine that he is there ...

In short, Christine would NOT have ever chosen book Phantom, as opposed to the way we are screaming at her for not choosing Movie Phantom!
